The relationship between Trump and Netanyahu is getting increasingly tense, particularly due to recent developments such as the announcement of a truce with Yemen and negotiations with Iran that occurred without Israel's knowledge, alongside direct talks with Hamas. Trump has also refused to meet Netanyahu’s demands during his visit to Washington.
Trump has sent several “warning messages” to Netanyahu, including the dismissal of Waltz, Israel's exclusion from agreements related to Yemen, calls to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, and recent statements from Whitkoff.... all of which have come as a shock to Israel.
Despite this, Trump has exhibited a degree of tolerance towards Netanyahu's aggressive policies. He overlooked Netanyahu’s sabotage of the Gaza agreement, suggested the displacement of Gaza’s population, permitted the escalation of military operations in Lebanon, and the blockade of Gaza.
So, what are Trump’s objectives behind these warning messages, and what are their limits?
1- Initially, Trump allowed Netanyahu to undermine the agreement reached with Hamas in Gaza because he wanted to concentrate on his struggle against powerful factions within the deep state. He aimed to avoid a confrontation with the Jewish lobby in the United States.
However, as internal divisions within Israel reached unprecedented levels, Trump seized the opportunity to send stronger messages to Netanyahu.
This division has also impacted Israel’s supporters in the U.S., with many American Jews and key pro-Israel Republican figures believing Netanyahu and the far-right are compromising Israel’s strategic security and interests for personal gain.
2- Without a doubt, Trump benefits from Israeli moves that weaken other forces in the Middle East, as it helps him pursue American-Israeli superiority.
During this period, Trump may utilize Netanyahu to weaken Iran’s allies, thereby putting pressure on Iran to make concessions regarding its nuclear program.
3- Currently, Trump is allowing Netanyahu to act aggressively and independently in the Middle East because he has other regional and global priorities.
However, when the time comes to discuss peace in the Middle East in line with the American vision, Trump, along with Israel’s supporters in the U.S., will prioritize the security and stability of Israel as a state over Netanyahu and his extremist right-wing groups.
